Local News...

REALLY BIG NEWS!!!
As of today;
Marriage Builders Radio with Joyce Harley and Dr. Bill Harley
is coming to Tom's Place
on

Spirit 95.9 FM, and AM 1300, and also streamed live around the world on www.marriagebuilders.com

 Joyce HarleyBill Harley
First a story of how we got to where we're at today...

As many of you that regularly read Tom's Place already know, Joyce and Bill Harley are genuinely good friends with Sue and me.  They also did a terrific marriage and relationship talk radio show together for many years on my alma mater in Eagan.  At years end the local Salem GM decided on a major programming change yet again, and this time (to nearly everyone's amazement) it took 20 year Twin City talk radio veteran Joyce and her husband, NY Times best selling author Bill Harley, off-air.

Guess what? Their loss is our gain as both Bill and Joyce have accepted my invitation to join me on Spirit 95.9 FM and AM 1300!

Beginning today, I will be the Executive Producer of Marriage Talk Radio heard locally and online, plus look for satellite radio, pod-casting, and even syndication for the not too distant future.

I have requested a leave of absence from my daily talk show duties to pursue the project, and the management-ownership team has agreed, and we're all excited about Bill and Joyce's new presence during the old Tom's Place segment from 3 to 6 p.m.!

Please tune in today for day one, and call Bill and Joyce with your marriage, or family concern, or whatever question you're seeking an answer too.  You probably know that Bill is one of the foremost authorities in the field, having written scores of books with one selling three million copies; "His Needs, Her Needs."  And the chemistry with he and Joyce is infectious!

I will be in studio with the Harleys today, so please call in and congratulate them.  The studio numbers are (local) 651-464-6796 and (toll-free) 877-466-5270.

Though we're not ready to bring AM 1300 on-line quite yet, please tune in on Spirit 95.9 FM for the beautiful full sound of FM talk radio.  The signal is quite clear in roughly the North half the metro area, from approximately 394 ... or tune in on-line at www.marriagebuilders.com.

Thanks too for all of you who were being added daily to the audience of my afternoon drive talk-show.  I appreciate you, and to quote Governor Arnold "I'll be back!"

Humor ... well, sort of anyway...

New Math

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58.  The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled eight cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and three pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried.

Why do I tell you this? Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s...

Teaching Math In 1950:
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is  4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1960:
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is  4/5 of the price, or $80.  What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1970:
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80.  Did he make a profit?

Teaching Math In 1980:
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is  $80 and his profit is $20.  Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

Teaching Math In 1990:
A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands.  He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers.)

Teaching Math In 2005:
Un hachero vende una carretada de madera para $100.  El costo de la producción es $80

A Polish immigrant goes to the Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles in Milwaukee to apply for a driver's license and is told he has to take an eye test.

The examiner shows him a card with the following letters: C Z J W I X N O S T A C Z

"Can you read this?" the examiner asks.  "Read it?" the Polish fellow replies, "I know the guy!"
